Aurora Igloo: the simple glass igloo
Aurora Igloo is on the outskirts of Hella in South Iceland, about 100 km from Reykjavik, and has a second site in the north. Each igloo sleeps 2 and has a double bed, heating and decor. There are two types: the standard igloo with a shared bathroom and shower a short walk away, and the private igloo with its own bathroom. Choose the private igloo if a walk to a shared bathroom at night would be a problem.
Panorama Glass Lodge: a cabin with a hot tub
Panorama Glass Lodge has seven glass cabins on two sites: four in South Iceland near Hella (Alva, Freya, Odin and Thor) and three in West Iceland near Akranes (Frigg, Heimdall and Njord). All have a hot tub and a hammock net; the lodges have a kitchen with two stoves, a fridge with a small freezer, a toaster, a coffee machine, a kettle and a microwave, plus basic supplies and cookware. The northern lights can be seen from the bed, and the roof windows have no curtains, so sleeping masks are provided from May to August. In the south, each lodge shares a sauna with one other lodge, and Frigg in the west has a private sauna. Heimdall and Njord are standard lodges for two. The distance from Keflavik airport is 159 km (about 2 hours 10 minutes) to the south site and 112 km (about 1 hour 30 minutes) to the west site.
Reykjavik Domes: aurora close to the city
Reykjavik Domes is at Gufunesvegur 1 in Reykjavik, 10 minutes from downtown, with free parking. The domes have glass-front walls facing Mount Esja, a wood-burning fireplace with firewood on arrival, sheepskins, a king-size bed and a private hot tub on a private deck.
- Standard Dome: 25 m², sleeps 2, shared bathroom and kitchen a short walk across the garden.
- Deluxe Dome: 35 m², sleeps 2, private bathroom inside the dome.
- King Suite: 45 m², up to 4 guests on two 180 cm beds, private bathroom and kitchen; three identical units named Hekla, Krafla and Keilir.
Check-in is by phone from 16:00 and check-out is by 11:00. The site offers free cancellation up to 5 days before check-in and free Wi-Fi.
Which to choose
- Your first night, or no car: Reykjavik Domes, at 10 minutes from downtown.
- A simple glass igloo for two: Aurora Igloo, private version for an en-suite bathroom.
- A cabin with a kitchen and a hot tub: Panorama Glass Lodge.
- A lodge on the Ring Road or the Golden Circle trip: the south sites near Hella; see how to get around Iceland and Iceland car rental.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking a glass cabin in May to August expecting the northern lights. Panorama Glass Lodge provides sleeping masks in those months for the bright nights; read Iceland in summer and northern lights tours.
- Choosing a standard igloo without checking the bathroom: it is shared at Aurora Igloo and at the standard Reykjavik dome.
- Forgetting the distance from Keflavik airport: 112 or 159 km for Panorama Glass Lodge.
- Counting on a clear sky: for a wider choice of aurora stays, see northern lights hotels in Iceland and Iceland in winter.
