Heights, lengths and access are from Visit Iceland and the Westfjords tourism site, read on 7 November 2026.

How long to allow

The Westfjords are a region of fjords, not a single stop, and the sources do not give driving distances from Reykjavík to Dynjandi, Látrabjarg or Rauðasandur, so a quick day trip should not be assumed. A 3-day guided tour from Reykjavík exists: From Reykjavík: 3-Day Tour of the Wild Westfjords is rated 5.0 out of 5, but from only 9 reviews on 8 November 2026; the price depends on the date and the group. A rating built on 9 reviews is a good sign, not yet a track record.

Dynjandi

Dynjandi is the waterfall to prioritise: a cascade of falls at the bottom of Arnarfjörður with a cumulative height of about 100 m. A scenic walk passes smaller waterfalls on the way up, and platforms and stairs were recently added. If you only want the view, restrooms are at the bottom. From Ísafjörður there is a guided bus day trip, covered in Ísafjörður.

Látrabjarg and the birds

Látrabjarg is the westernmost point of Iceland. The cliff extends about 14 km from Bjargtangar to Keflavik and rises over 440 m at Heiðnakinn. Visit Iceland warns of caution during puffin nesting season, when cliff edges are unstable and full of burrows. For puffins in general, see puffin tours in Iceland.

Rauðasandur

Rauðasandur is a shell-sand beach 12 to 13 km long, east of Látrabjarg in the south-west of the region. Its colour comes from scallop fragments and has a red tinge. The sources give no season, access or road details for it.

Ísafjörður and the north

Ísafjörður is a trading post since the 16th century. Hnífsdalur is 4 km from the town and Súðavík 20 km. Súgandafjörður and Suðureyri are about 20 minutes' drive away. The Bolafjall viewpoint is reached on Route 61 toward Bolungarvík and was closed to vehicles for the season when the site was read on 7 November 2026.

When to go

The Westfjords tourism site gives monthly figures: an average of 9°C and 24 hours of daylight in June, 10°C and 23 hours in July, and 0°C with 3 hours of daylight in January and December. It suggests September and October as a quieter time, with less busy roads. The Bolafjall road is only open in summer. For the whole country by month see the best time to visit Iceland, and for roads in the dark months Iceland in winter.

Getting around

The region is easiest with a vehicle of your own, see how to get around Iceland and Iceland car rental. The Westfjords tourism site links to road conditions in Iceland; check them the day you drive. For a full circle of the country compare Iceland Ring Road tours.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Planning the Westfjords as a day trip from Reykjavík: the sources give no driving distances, and the 3-day tour is the shortest guided format listed.
  • Counting on Bolafjall outside summer: the road was closed to vehicles for the season.
  • Walking to the edge at Látrabjarg in nesting season: the edges are unstable and full of burrows.
  • Booking the whole route for winter without looking at daylight: January and December have 3 hours.
