Dimmuborgir is a lava field east of Lake Mývatn in North Iceland, where a collapsed lava tube left hollow pillars and arches. Marked paths range from a small circle of about 30 minutes to a big circle of about 1 hour that leads to the best-known formation, the Church (Kirkjan). Highlights

The lava pillars
formed about 2,300 years ago, when a lava lake at least 10 m deep pooled over a marsh, and rising steam made hollow columns before the top crust collapsed.
The Church (Kirkjan)
a lava tube formation reached by steps, with a cave open at both ends and a high, dome-shaped roof.
The trail network
several marked routes with maps at the crossings; most are easy to walk.
Game of Thrones
the HBO series filmed here, with Dimmuborgir forming the background of Mance Rayder's wildling camp.

Tips
- Choose the small circle for a quick stop (about 30 minutes, easy) or the big circle (about 1 hour) to reach the Church. A longer walk runs from Stóragjá and Grjótagjá over the Hverfjall crater and ends at Dimmuborgir, taking 3 to 4 hours one way. The rock is brittle: climbing on the formations is forbidden, so stay on the paths. Many formations look alike, so follow the signs and the maps at the crossings rather than wandering off. The area is part of the classic Mývatn loop with Lake Mývatn, Mývatn Nature Baths and Goðafoss; it also sits on the Diamond Circle loop, which takes in Dettifoss and Húsavík. The nearby baths sell tickets: the Myvatn Nature Baths entrance ticket is rated 4.5 out of 5 from 2,322 reviews, from about €51 on 6 November 2026. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a windproof layer.
