Skógafoss is a 60 m waterfall on the river Skógá, beside the village of Skógar on Iceland's Ring Road, and the only cost of a visit is parking: ISK 1,000 for a private car of up to five seats (Parka, read 7 November 2026). Most visitors reach it on a South Coast day trip from Reykjavík or by rental car; the stop itself takes under an hour unless you walk up the river. Highlights
The falls at the foot
A single drop of 60 m onto the plain; on sunny days a rainbow often forms in front of it, according to the South Iceland tourism board.
The path upstream
A path follows the river to the top of the falls and beyond, past more waterfalls; the tourism board calls it a great hike.
Fimmvörðuháls
From Skógá a path of about 10 km crosses the Fimmvörðuháls pass to Þórsmörk, for walkers planning more than a photo stop.
Kvernufoss
A walking path to this second waterfall, 1.5 km east, starts at the Skógar Museum car park.
Skógar Museum and church
The museum shows regional artefacts and an old turf farmhouse, and the Skógakirkja church dates from 1890.
The South Coast tour
A guided day tour from Reykjavík stops here with the other southern sights: South Coast Waterfalls, Black Sand & Glacier Tour, rated 4.8 out of 5 from 12,990 reviews, from €107 on 6 November 2026.

Tips
- Parking is paid by licence plate through Parka: ISK 1,000 for a car of up to five seats, ISK 1,300 for six to nine seats, ISK 400 for a motorcycle, plus an 89 ISK payment fee. Choose the class that matches the seats registered for the vehicle, because a wrong class can bring an extra bill, and pay within 24 hours after you leave or a 1,960 ISK surcharge is added. Fishing for salmon and char takes place below the falls from July to October. Overnight options in Skógar include Hotel Drangshlíð, Hotel Skogá and the Skógar camping ground. To see the other stops of the route, read the South Coast day tours compared, the Seljalandsfoss page and the Reynisfjara page.
How to get there
Skógar sits a few kilometres from the south coast along Road 1, about 30 km east of Seljalandsfoss. By car, park in the lot at the falls; without a car, take a South Coast day tour from Reykjavík (see how to get around Iceland).
