The Flybus in detail
Flybus is operated by Icelandia and says it has run the service since 1979. Buses call at the BSÍ Bus Terminal in Reykjavík, with additional stops at Hamraborg in Kópavogur, Aktu Taktu in Garðabær and Fjörukráin in Hafnarfjörður. Departures run from early morning until late at night; the timetable lists airport arrivals from 03:30 to 23:15, and the page warns that times may change. The service guarantees a seat on the next available departure even if your flight is delayed. Tickets are one-way or return, booked online, at a kiosk or through partners; each includes two bags of up to 23 kg (50 lbs). Extra luggage costs a small fee.
Hotel drop-off
A smaller shuttle serves many Reykjavík hotels and guesthouses from BSÍ. The page notes that the hotel drop-off may carry an additional fee. If your hotel is in the centre, check how far it sits from BSÍ and from the stops above, because the area decides which version you need; the areas are compared in where to stay in Reykjavik.
Stopping at a lagoon on the way
The Blue Lagoon is 21 km and 15 minutes by car from the airport, between the airport and the city, with luggage storage by the parking lot and bus transfers from Destination Blue Lagoon that are timed around flights. See Reykjavik to Blue Lagoon transfer. Sky Lagoon is 45 minutes from the airport and 13 minutes from the city, with a shuttle from Reykjavík run by Icelandia for a small fee; see Sky Lagoon.
Local buses in town
Once in the city, the Strætó single fare is ISK 690 (straeto.is, read 7 November 2026), and with fare capping an adult never pays for more than 3 rides a day. The Reykjavik City Card includes unlimited Strætó buses in the capital area but not bus 55 to the airport nor airport transfers (visitreykjavik.is, read 7 November 2026); see is the Reykjavik City Card worth it?. For all the options in one place, read Iceland airport transfer and how to get around Iceland.
Mistakes to avoid
- Counting on a hotel drop-off at no cost: it may carry an additional fee.
- Expecting the City Card to cover the airport bus: bus 55 is excluded.
- Missing the extra-baggage limit: two bags of up to 23 kg are included.
- Assuming a late flight cancels your seat: Flybus guarantees the next departure.
