Is it realistic in a day?

On the road, the lagoon lies directly on Route 1 on Breiðamerkursandur, about 370 km east of Reykjavík according to the lagoon's operator and 380 km according to Visit Iceland. The paved Route 1 reaches the area, but the distance leaves little room for stops, and in December there are only four to five hours of daylight. In winter a day tour or an overnight stop is safer than a solo day drive; see Iceland in winter. Highway conditions can change quickly, so check safetravel.is and road.is before leaving.

What you do at the lagoon

Parking is ISK 1,110 for a private car of up to five seats and also covers the Diamond Beach, which is about 1 km from the car park along a path under the bridges (see Diamond Beach and Jökulsárlón). Boats are sold by the lagoon's operator. The amphibian boat lasts 30 to 40 minutes and runs from May to November: ISK 7,100 for adults aged 13 and over, ISK 3,500 for ages 6 to 12, free for ages 0 to 5. The Zodiac lasts about 1 hour 15 minutes and runs from May to October: ISK 16,600 for adults and ISK 8,300 for ages 10 to 12, with a minimum height of 130 cm. From October to April a glacier lagoon ice cave tour of 2.5 to 3 hours runs, booked through explorers.is. Booking ahead is recommended in summer. Prices are valid for 2026.

Practical details

Flush toilets and privately run restaurants are on site, and park rangers supervise the area daily. Parking is paid by licence plate through Parka, and if you already paid the full fee at another Vatnajökull National Park site the same day the second fee is 50 percent off. The national park posted a notice of a temporary closure of the main Jökulsárlón car park on 1 October 2026, so check the park's news before you drive. A second lagoon, Fjallsárlón, lies slightly further west.

Where to sleep to make it easier

Splitting the trip at Vík gives a first night with the South Coast sights; see where to stay in South Iceland. Skaftafell is 70 km east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur and 130 km west of Höfn, and it offers a campsite open all year and the Svartifoss loop of 5.8 km (see Skaftafell). The full route with the lagoon is in 7 days in Iceland.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Planning the lagoon as a short stop: with 760 km on the road, the day is mostly driving.
  • Counting on a boat in winter: the Zodiac stops after October and the amphibian after November.
  • Booking the Zodiac for a child under 130 cm.
  • Skipping the weather check on Route 1 in winter.
