Practical info

Tips

  • Choose by season and budget: the amphibian is the cheapest and shortest, the Zodiac the closest to the ice, and only the ice cave tour runs in winter. Visit Iceland notes that boat tours wind down as winter approaches, with some amphibian tours possibly running into early November. The national park posted a notice of a temporary closure of the main Jökulsárlón car park on 1 October 2026, so check the park's news before you drive. Parking is paid by licence plate (Parka): ISK 1,110 for up to five seats, valid until midnight, with 50 % off if you paid the full fee at another Vatnajökull National Park site the same day. Flush toilets and privately run restaurants are on site. Park rangers supervise the area daily and can be reached on 842-4355. Next door in the park, see Skaftafell, and for the winter cave season read ice cave tours in Iceland.

How to get there

The lagoon lies directly on Route 1 on Breiðamerkursandur. Drive east along the south coast, or book a long day tour from Reykjavík (see how to get around Iceland).
