The main experiences
- Golden Circle (7 to 8.5 hours). Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss and Kerid crater in one loop, with pick-up at one of about 20 Reykjavik stops. Best for first-time visitors without a car. Lunch is at Geysir, about 80 minutes. If you drive, Þingvellir parking costs ISK 1,000 per car. See Gullfoss and Geysir.
- South Coast (10 hours). Skógafoss, Sólheimajökull, Vík, Reynisfjara and Seljalandsfoss, from about €105 to €120. Reynisfjara's waves are dangerous: never turn your back on the sea. See Reynisfjara.
- Blue Lagoon (about 2 hours). The classic lagoon, about 20 minutes from the airport. Comfort tickets start at ISK 12,990 on the official site, and pre-booking is essential. Hours are 08:00 to 22:00 from 21 August to 31 December. See Blue Lagoon tickets.
- Sky Lagoon (Kópavogur). The option near the city, with a seaside feel . The Saman pass costs €115.34 for an adult on the official site. Rated 4.8 from 8,041 reviews. See Sky Lagoon.
- Northern lights (4 hours). Small-group tours leave Reykjavik from September to mid-April. Both listings offer a free second try, but nothing is guaranteed. The big bus with hot cocoa costs from €64. See northern lights tours.
- Glacier walk (11 hours from Reykjavik). The day tour from €168.47 includes a guided walk on Sólheimajökull, and the listing supplies crampons, harness, helmet and ice axe. Best for active travellers. See glacier hikes.
- Ice cave (winter). The Katla ice cave tour from Vík costs from €166.50 for a group of up to 14, from November to March. It is a Super Jeep ride, not a hike. See ice cave tours.
- Silfra snorkeling (3 hours). Swim in clear water between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, in a dry suit. The small-group tour from €126 takes at most 6 people. See Silfra snorkeling.
- Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. About 380 km from Reykjavik, so a day trip means about 760 km of driving. A guided day tour from €179 is the easiest way. See the day trip and the lagoon.
- Reykjavik on foot (free). Harpa, the Sun Voyager sculpture, Hallgrímskirkja, the Tjörnin pond and Grótta Lighthouse cost nothing. See free things to do in Reykjavik.
- Whale watching from Akureyri (3 hours). The classic tour runs on the Hólmasól catamaran; humpbacks are the most common sighting. In summer there are several departures a day. In winter, tours run only with 10 or more people. See Akureyri whale watching.
- The Westfjords (three days minimum). Dynjandi, Látrabjarg and the red Rauðasandur beach. June has 24 hours of daylight. A 3-day guided tour from Reykjavik is the alternative to driving. See Westfjords tours.
How to choose
- Two days only: the Golden Circle and the South Coast, each a long day by tour (7 to 8.5 hours and 10 hours).
- Three to four days: add a lagoon on arrival or departure day, a Silfra or glacier morning and, in winter, a northern lights evening.
- Reykjavik with pool and museums: the City Card pays off only if you add pools, museums and buses in the same days. One museum and a pool do not cover its price.
- No car: every offer above starts in Reykjavik or offers pick-up there, except the Katla ice cave, which meets in Vík.
- Weather: the glacier, ice cave and Silfra offers can be cancelled for conditions, and the listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
